History

The Nisenan, or Southern Maidu, were the area’s first occupants. Historically, the Valley Nisenan lived by flowing water and traveled between locations in canoes fashioned from tule reeds. They prospered through hunting, fishing, and foraging for sustenance in the region.

In 1839, after ascending the Sacramento River, John Sutter and his troops landed in the northwest corner of what would become Sutter’s Landing Park. Shortly thereafter, Sutter established a permanent camp and subsequently constructed his fort on the current location of Sutter’s Fort, the earliest settlement inside the current city limits of Sacramento.

To prevent flooding, soil was removed from Sutter’s Landing to construct levees and raise the city. By the middle of the 1800s, these excavations had produced huge pits.

The pits were eventually filled with waste caused by the city’s expansion. The location was designated as the 28th Street Landfill. It grew to become the city’s principal dump, as well as the highest point in Sacramento.

In 1984, after decades of use, the city chose the dump as the eventual site of a regional park. The City Council called it Sutter’s Landing Park in 1989, and a preliminary master plan for the park was authorized in 1995. The current approved Sutter’s Landing Park Master Plan for the City of Sacramento was adopted in October 2003. A lot of important enhancements have been made to the park since then.
